Landscape as Autofiction (work in progress)
For the past 19 years, longer than any other period of my life, my home has been a tiny village, high in the Southern Uplands of Dumfries & Galloway. The distinctive characteristics of this environment have been important in shaping my identity and, subsequently developing my practice as an artist.
Since settling here, I have been photographing the landscape of this immediate area with varying degrees of intent. A couple of years ago I decided to start taking this process a little more seriously. I invested in the cameras, lenses and, most importantly, the time required to learn how to represent a sense of what it means to be so connected to a landscape.
All the photographs on this website were made within a relatively short walk from home. This is an archival resource, from which I intend to develop new work closely related to the major and longstanding themes in my practice; the construction of identity through knowledge and belief.
